A Horse is a Horse

Unless it’s the one Mary got to ride yesterday. Then it’s the most wonderful thing in the whole world!

There’s a man at Gulfstream that Bill works with that has horses. In one of their conversations together, he told Bill to bring Mary by anytime and he’d show her around the horses.

Yesterday was the day! After we decided that we were going to go, it wasn’t to humid, wasn’t as hot as other days and no rain clouds in sight, I went upstairs and told Mary to get dressed, she’ll need to wear her tennis shoes and to put her hair up. We had a surprise for her. A little grin popped on her face and she got busy.

We headed out, stopping for a couple quick errands, then we headed toward Statesboro. Mary was in the back seat, looking out the window, Hannah Montana songs playing in her MP3 player.

When we turned onto a dirt road about half an hour later, Mary pipes up in the back seat,

“I thought we were going to that guys house that has the horses!”

I couldn’t believe it.

I should, she’s a smart little…well…I turned around and said,

“You terd! How’d you figure that out?”

She just grinned from ear to ear.

“Well, we’re kinda drivin’ out here in the middle of nowhere, mom.”

I’m getting dumber, the kid’s getting smarter. Can’t pull anything over on this one if she’s paying any attention at all.

Curtis and his wife, Beverly, were so nice! We chatted for a while, pet their dog, Milly, and soon we were off to put Mary on a horse.

Curtis was wonderful with her! His wife said we made his day. He just loves to show off his horses!

Mary was nervous at first, of course, but within a few minutes she was fine. Curtis talked to her the whole time, leading the horse with Mary perched on top, telling her all kinds of things. I could see Mary was talking to him, too, so I knew she was relaxing and enjoying her adventure.

This is Rebel. He was quite jealous that his friend, Ferrell, had a visiter and got to go out of the pasture.

As you can see, Mary is having a great time! Even her new friend seems to be posing for this shot!

After her ride she helped cool down Ferrell. She was so excited still, I thought she was going to end up showering Curtis with the hose, too!

Bill and I made friends with them, too. Rebel decided to taste my arm at one point. He didnt’ bite, though.

Rebel likes to drink right out of the hose! This was great fun for Mary. Rebel got a drink; Mary got a shower!

We were also let in on a little secret. Rebel likes to hold a bunch of water in his mouth and when you least expect it, he’ll spit it out! We were careful about being too close to Rebel after his drink!

We went inside and visited for a while before we headed to Statesboro for dinner. We had a really nice time. Mary got on the phone right away to call Dayna and tell her about her adventures! Mary chattered all the way home about all the things Curtis taught her, right up until she nodded off, her chin resting in the palm of her hand, for the rest of the ride home.
